Mandate for African School of Open Education (ASOE)
To be the community education and training arm of AVA. ASOE takes charge of all non-formal education, skills development, and sensitization programs, making learning accessible and practical for all community members, especially youth and women.
Core Functions & Activities:
- Vocational Skills Training: Designing and overseeing hands-on training programs for youth empowerment. This includes the collaboration with the Uganda Rural Development Training Institute (URDT-I) to train cohorts of young people in marketable skills such as nursery bed management, tailoring, knitting, hairdressing, welding, and motorcycle repair, with certification from the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT).
- Community Sensitization: Developing and delivering educational content on critical issues. This includes sensitizing communities on the importance of plant biodiversity, sustainable resource use, and health and wellness, as carried out in the villages around Kibale National Park and Bugoma CFR.
- Promoting African Science and Knowledge: Creating platforms for the transmission and revalorisation of indigenous knowledge, particularly in areas like traditional medicine and sustainable environmental practices, as fostered through training with PHARMBIOTRAC.
- Outreach and Engagement: Utilizing a flexible, community-based approach to reach marginalized groups, including refugees and those in remote rural areas, ensuring that education and skills are brought directly to where they are needed most.
Location: Main office at Businge, Kamwenge District, with activities extending to all communities where AVA operates.
